Embodiment as Accountability Practice in Social Justice Activism - AN EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

Social justice activism has the goal of making sure everyone has access to what they need to survive and thrive. People in the movement work tirelessly to disrupt systems of power and oppression and center the voices and wellbeing of those who are marginalized. The shadow side of this work is participating in an “us” and “them” mentality that lets us off the hook from admitting the ways we can also participate and be complicit in oppressive dynamics. It also fails to see that everyone is negatively impacted in systems of oppression; even those benefitting from them. At the heart of justice work needs to be an acknowledgment that our liberation is bound, and until we can let the whole world into our hearts (including those we don’t agree with or like), our movement will be ineffective and disingenuous. This is not easy work. In this workshop we will explore embodied practices and a paradigm of somatic awareness that can support us to truly be the change we want to see. Radical self-awareness and accountability is the foundation of authentic and impactful social change work. Participants will be invited to reflect on the life experiences that have shaped them so that they can make a stand for collective liberation in a meaningful way. We will dream together the future we want to inhabit and vision the steps it takes to get there.

In this workshop, we will explore:

  • Framework of embodied social justice activism

  • Personal reflection on their own socialization and positionality

  • Embodied practices for accountability

Becoming a Voice of Change - AN EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

Voice as A Teaching and Therapeutic Tool - Your Voice Matters - Your Voice is Medicine

Are you ready to reclaim the power of your self expression and use your voice as a tool for change? This class will support you in embodying and speaking your authentic truth in ways that are effective, grounded and impactful. One of the most important tools we possess is our vocabulary and our unique voice and it is time for our voices to be used in the service of healing and change. But so many of us are terrified of our authentic voice that we bury it, silence it and cover it up. What if we trusted our vessel and courageously gave ourselves permission to live and speak our truth? What if the world was calling us to become voices of change? What if our voice was necessary for the healing of our world?

Our bodies hold trauma and our voice is one of the most powerful ways to both release trauma and to regulate our nervous systems. In these intense times we can use our voices to shift and transform anxiety…we can tap into and utilize the inherent wisdom of our bodies and voices to calm our nervous systems and bring us to states of grounded clarity and focus. We can learn simple techniques that come to us from both ancient practices and through the lens of modern sound and brain science to assist us in living lives of ease and vitality.

In this workshop, designed specifically for teachers and students who feel blocked in their expression, we will discover the authentic voice within and enhance the potency and power of our self expression as facilitators.

We will learn about the healing power and medicinal uses of sound as well as specific instruction on how to use your voice as an aid to transformation and awakening. We will break free from the stifling grip of the inner critic and focus on freeing the natural voice and allowing our innate creativity to break through and flourish!

If you are terrified of singing in public and/or speaking out, this workshop is for you. If you are stuck in old patterns and need help to take your life to the next level, this workshop is for you. If you long to re/discover your voice, this workshop is for you. If you are ready to use your voice and assist others in finding their own unique expression, JOIN US. And let your voice be heard!

You will learn:

  • how self expression is key to healing trauma

  • how embodying our truth can lead to a more joyful life

  • how to unlock your creative potential and find the self-expression that fits you best
* to understand and heal the core traumas that keep you protected but shut down
* the science of sound healing as well as how to use your own voice as a tool for empowerment

  • how to remove blocks to power & confidence and get your message into the world
*how to use words and songs to awaken, heal, and build community
*how to use your voice to support your work in affecting systemic change

The duet of the heart and breathing diaphragm - AN EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

The heart is situated on top of the breathing diaphragm. They are connected to each other through a strong connective tissue. Their movement keep us alive- allowing for the external breathing through the lungs and for the internal respiration of the cells. Each of them has its own pulsating rhythm and together they provide us with our fundamental personal rhythmic pattern. Their mutual dance begins during early embryonic development and continues throughout life. this class will explore the embodiment of their special relationship.

In this class, you will experience:

  • Embodiment of the embryological origins of the connection between the heart and diaphragm.

  • Exploration of the relationships between heart and diaphragm through asana, breath and movement.

  • Cultivation of deep listening to one's own heart.

Finding Refuge: Heart Work for Healing Collective Grief - AN EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

Many of us have been searching for ways to find refuge during the onslaught of trauma connected with Covid-19 and the heightened awareness of how white supremacy and systems of oppression harm us all but disparately. These collective experiences of trauma mean that many of us are holding onto deep grief. We live in a culture that in large part doesn’t make space for us to process our grief and if we do have space to do so often we process privately not in community. This class is designed for us to engage spiritual practice to turn toward our grief individually and collectively. It will be an opportunity for us to reflect on how our hearts are doing at this time and to begin to understand more about how to allow grief to move through us. It will include meditation, lecture and journaling.

In this class, you will learn:

  • The benefits and value of connecting with grief

  • About the link between cultural trauma and collective grief

  • How to use spiritual practice to support us as we grieve individually and collectively"

Interoceptive Pranayama for Supporting Chronic Conditions - AN EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

In this workshop, Kristine Weber will talk about the benefits of “Interoceptive Pranayama,” how to help people slowly and mindfully get into and out of simple pranayama ratios, and the benefits of these practices for people struggling with chronic conditions.

Before COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control, 60% of Americans had at least one chronic condition and 40% had two or more. As it turns out, COVID-19, at least in some cases, appears to be both an acute viral condition as well as a chronic illness.

Estimates suggest that between 10-33% of patients (typically women between 20-50) who contract the virus will become long-haulers and experience a range of symptoms long-term including fatigue, shortness of breath, joint, muscle, and chest pain, brain fog, depression, headaches, fevers, heart palpitations, hair loss, rashes, smell and taste problems, insomnia, memory issues and more. These symptoms point to dysautonomia – dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. Medical professionals are turning to breathing practices for help.

Because people world-wide will need viable self-care adjunctive therapies to support their recovery, yoga professionals may have something to add to this conversation.

In this session, Kristine will:

1. Identify the benefits of interoceptive pranayama for people with chronic health challenges

2. Teach 4 effective interoceptive pranayama techniques

3. Explain how to gentle approach pranayama ratios

Foundations for Facilitators and Teachers - AN EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

Affirming practices for working with transgender, nonbinary, and gender variant community members in the yoga and meditation wellness world

The intention of this workshop is twofold: 1) To increase safety for transgender, nonbinary, and gender variant individuals in the meditation and yoga wellness world; as well as, 2) Provide facilitators and teachers in the yoga and meditation wellness world with a deeper understanding of the experiences of transgender, nonbinary, and gender variant community members. By participating in this workshop, one can expect both educational components as well as an opportunity for embodied, experiential, self-inquiry. The purpose of embodied, experiential, self-inquiry is to deepen the relationship with the inner Self. By knowing and deepening the relationship with the Self, one learns to be gentler, kinder, and more compassionate towards one's own lived experiences and shadow work. With increased compassion towards the Self, one is naturally more open and accepting of others. In other words, when one understands one’s relationship to their own gender, especially folks who align with the gender they were assigned at birth, they are then better equipped to understand the gender experiences of individuals who do not align with the gender they were assigned at birth. This workshop can be useful for folks who have an understanding of transgender, nonbinary, and gender variant experiences, as well as individuals who have never stopped to examine their gender privilege.

By participating in this workshop, individuals will be exposed to:

  • Safe and affirming practices for working with transgender, nonbinary, and gender variant individuals

  • Basic definitions and terminology

  • Embodied, experiential activity investigating and interrogating one's own gender

Franklin Method®: Imagery for a healthy spine in yoga - AN EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

90-min workshop

The spine is a masterpiece of design containing over one hundred joints and associated muscles and ligaments. How, then, is it possible that so many people suffer from debilitating pain associated with the spine? Complex design requires conscious maintenance. Why do we have a spine in the first place? Why is it shaped the way it is? This workshop will explain spinal evolution, design and function using imagery and simple movement. A new embodied understanding of the spine paves the way for all daily movement and exercise to benefit spinal health. The ability to correctly use anatomical cues and guide Yoga enthusiasts through their movements will provide a new level of confidence and expertise in their classes, and it will give practitioners the knowledge they need to avoid injury and fully enjoy the benefits of yoga.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • Exercises to strengthen the inter vertebral discs, joints and muscles

  • How the ligaments and discs interact to strengthen the spine

  • Which cues in exercise and Yoga support optimal spinal function

  • Experience the psychological aspect of back pain as well as learn exercises to improve the “mood” of your back and your whole body

Social justice work is endless and urgent. How do we show up for it, accountable to each of our roles in creating justice, resisting harmful policies, mourning our losses, shifting the root causes, and envisioning a just future, year after year? The practices of forgiveness and compassion direct us in this work, to refill our own wells in healing the wounds that propel our social justice work, to let go of the burden of rage-to let it be passing and igniting but recognizing that it cannot sustain our change work, and to live into the teaching that hatred will not cease by hatred, but by love alone.

  • Forgiveness Meditation

  • Gentleness in Social Justice Work

Trauma-Informed Yoga for the healing of sexual abuse, trafficking and exploitation - AN EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

The repercussions of sexual trauma manifest differently for each person. After a boundary violation such as sexual abuse, trafficking and exploitation, individuals can experience a range of emotions and reactions which may be confusing and painful.

When working with marginalized populations from different cross-cultural contexts, race, and religion, the process of recovery can be multi-layered, nuanced, and challenging.

In this conference, Atira Tan (Ph.D. candidate, M.A, SEP, 500E-RYT), founder of Art to Healing, an Australian charity that supports the trauma resolution of child sex slaves in Asia, with her 17 years of experience mapping the recovery with sex trafficked survivors, will share the efficacy and importance of Trauma-Informed Yoga, and using the body as a bridge to our somatic instinctual intelligence, as a new way of healing sexual abuse through the psycho-physiology of the body-mind, beyond traditional talk therapy.

Since 2008, Atira has been delivering trauma-informed yoga with sex trafficked girls and women in four countries in Asia and the Pacific. She has been researching the efficacy of Trauma-Informed Yoga and other body-oriented approaches such as Somatic Experiencing in trauma resolution for sex trafficked women and children.

In this workshop, Atira will share her research and vital trauma-informed tools to empower the self in the wake of sexual assault, violence, and trauma through various embodied practices.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Why the body is key in recovery for sexual abuse and trafficking survivors.

  • How Trauma-Informed Yoga can reestablish the sense of safety in the body for sexual abuse and trafficking survivors.

  • Ways of how Trauma-Informed Yoga can support the cultivation of strength and resilience.

Juicy Psoas ~ Re-Wilding Core Expression - AN EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

At the very core of our being is a river of bio-intelligence and a primal tissue called psoas that flows out as a messenger of agency and core integrity. By striving for control, perfection, and superiority over our core expression, our psoas becomes captured and recruited resulting not only in exhaustion but also a constricted, dry tissue. Rewilding psoas is a journey of dissolving our willful engagement of the upper psoas in order to embody our bones by returning once again to root deep within and back down to the ground.

In this session, you will:

  • Re-imagine Psoas beyond bio-mechanical language to sense the core tissue as a bio-intelligent messenger

  • Experience the value of micro-movements to hydrate spinal vertebrae and connective tissue for gaining lush juicy psoas

  • Discover how skeletal proprioception supports neuro-coherency ground fluid psoas and ignite core integrity.

Drinking the Ambrosia - AN EXPERIENTIAL SESSION

In the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra, meditation is described as a journey, an adventure of discovery. We can begin anywhere, with no preparation other than a sense of wonder. Everything we need is right here, inside our ordinary human experience. The main skill is to welcome everything, every impulse of the life force. The reward of the journey is a renewed appreciation of this gift of life we have been given, this is the ambrosia, the nectar of life.

In this session you will discover that:

  • Meditation is instinctive and natural.

  • Each person has their own individual doorways.

  • There is a huge variety of techniques of meditation.
